Weekly Reflection #9 AI in Education

During my Master’s degree, my PI said something that has stuck with me since: “If you aren’t using AI you are just going to fall behind”. I think this is extremely true. That being said this is at a University level so when we are talking about AI in High School education I think it’s a little bit of a different story. It’s important to introduce students to AI and its powers but I also think that critical thinking and critical evaluation is extremely important. With that then there must be a balance between using AI and believing everything it spits out and also viewing what it’s saying through some critical lens. I think that students should be aware of what AI is but not heavily rely on it for solving all their problems and to answer all their homework.

I think there should be a little bit of a modification on how students are assessed. Knowing the powers of AI as teachers I think we can change our assignments that help to combat this and really assess the knowledge of the students. Some things you can do are assessment using no technology like popup quizzes, or evaluating scientific resources. That being said, there is still some expertise on using AI and being able to pick out the right information. So even though, a student might use AI to solve their problem, they still knew that they had to go use AI, and the right input to use to get their result. In a sense, that is a logical and important thought process for life.

I’m not sure what falls under the category of legitimate use of AI in schools. I think I would draw the line when we are using AI to replace teachers or mostly replace teachers. AI should help complement but not replace teachers. Likewise AI should help students, but not solve all their problems without them having to think and critically think.
