Free Inquiry # 8: Em’s Grilled Cheese

This week is an extremely busy week in terms of schooling and life so I thought I would do a recipe inspired again by my girlfriend but something that can relate a little bit to the student life and busy days, something that is pretty easy to make, a classic but also delicious. The grilled cheese. This is probably the one dish my girlfriend can confidently make but it is a good one. Here is my spin on the grilled cheese. Please enjoy!

Ingredients

Servings

I designed this recipe to make 1 grilled cheese but you can easily alter it to make more. The soup servers 1-3 people if you are making the whole packet.

Instructions

  1. Using a kettle, boil 4 cups of water.
  2. Pour boiling water into a small pot with the chicken noodle soup packet. Cook and simmer on medium low heat until the noodles are tender.
  3. Preheat a medium-sized pan on medium heat.
  4. Butter 1 side of each piece of bread.
  5. Toast the buttered side of bread on the pan until it is golden and crispy.
  6. Place the cheese on the toasted side of bread and form the sandwhich so both toasted sides are in contact with the cheese.’
  7. Butter the other side of the bread and place the sandwhich back on the pan to melt the cheese and toast the bread.
  8. Flip and repeat on the other side.
  9. Cut the sandwhich in half and serve with soup and ketchup.

Adaptations

Because time was a little bit of a constraint this week, I opted to make the simple version of this sandwhich. That being said there are a lot of different ways you can approach making this that are unique and delicious. Here are some of my thoughts.

  • Change the bread type. I usually use whatever I have in the panty but a nice thick cut sourdough or white bread is my favourite.
  • If you have a panini press use it! This gives you the classic grill marks and some nice texture that doesn’t come close to the pan fried version.
  • Feel free to add any toppings in the middle with the cheese. Some good options are ham, onions, tomatoes, and pulled chicken.
  • My all-time favourite soup to have with this is obviously tomato soup, however I did not have any in the pantry today. Have this with tomato soup and you will not be dissapointed.

Reflections

I really love this meal, its easy, delicious and it’s great for days you’re busy and need a quick meal like when I am cramming for all of my assignments due next week. I recently discovered the toasting both sides of the grilled cheese and I have not gone back since. It not only adds an extra texture element but it also helps the cheese melt faster. I’m sure we’ve all been there before making grilled cheeses and the insides aren’t cooking as fast as the outsides are (especially with thicker slices of bread). This is a great way to get even cooking so you don’t burn your bread. In a pinch this is an excellent choice of meal. Thanks to Emily again for the inspiration and I hope you all enjoy!
